About Qom Pigeon:
Pigeons of Qom or Qom Highflying Pigeons (QHF) are one of so many types of Iranian Highflying Pigeons (IHF).  This breed has its very own characteristics, such as smaller head comparing to other IHF breeds and round body. There is no accurate date of beginning of “Pigeon keeping” in Qom.  But by having an overall look at “Pigeoning” in Iran, we can track it back to “Safavians Time” (1501- 1722 A.D.) when Pigeon keeping became more like a competing sport.
Mr. Abbas Kababi, Mr. Seyyed Mahdi Chel-Akhtarani, and Mr.  Abolfazl Ghanad Are some the most well known Qom’s pigeon fanciers in 20th century.
Mr. Abolfazl Fathollahzadeh, Mr. Seyyed Hadi Kashani, Mr. Hasan Hoseini(Daroogheh), Mr Abolfazl Rasooli, Mr Seyyed M. Mohseni, Mr Abolfazl Kalhor,  Mr. Amir Gol are amongst the new generation of QHF fanciers.
The pigeon flying competitions are considered -sort of- entertainment in Qom. Every year, the fanciers fly their pigeons in late June and early July in Iranian style, which is known" Gerow". You can see and watch the QHF pigeons flying, anywhere in the city during the days of late June and early July. Rivals start flying same numbers of pigeons at 6 AM from their lofts and wait for them to come back.  At the end the referees calculate their average flight time.  The fancier with highest average of flight time is the winner of the “Gerow”. It is interesting to know that on some competition days, temperature sometimes reaches to 45 degrees Centigrade in shadow.
